Active hate against Asians in the US dates back as early as 1872.

This long history of hate against Asians is not well known due to the systemic erasure of Asian American history.

With the former president publicly blaming China for the pandemic, there has been an exponential increase in violent hate crimes against Asians.

We often see bystanders during these attacks.
Most of us regularly eat, shop, drink, and relax at Asian-run businesses. We support and enjoy them, but choosing a way to stand for them in the face of hate crimes feels complex or overwhelming for many. As a customer of Asian businesses, hate crimes against Asians are also our business. We want to turn affiliation into action, using something as simple, everyday and mundane as a check to make AAPI people, their businesses, and their allies rally together. |

Introducing
CHECK AGAINST HATE A pledge to stand with the Asian community |

Check Against Hate is a collaboration with Asian-run businesses across NYC to add a pledge to their bills. When a customer signs a receipt, they also take a vow of solidarity.
A QR code will make taking action simple, linking to a platform where supporters can donate and share the message. |

Some receipts are digital. We’ll use this format to type-animate our pledge on the screen. This way, we encourage the customer to engage and follow along, rather than scroll past the print.

Check Against Hate is an opportunity to connect Asian businesses and their customers in a way that’s more meaningful than a simple transaction. It’s a chance to engage bystanders during an everyday exchange, to start a conversation that leads to true allyship.
